According to the complaint, the Cantens' raised over $135 million from over 400 investors, who were primarily Cuban-Americans from the South Florida area.

The SEC claims that the Cantens' lured investors by offering promissory with annual returns ranging from 9 to 16 percent. Their promises were backed by the purported success of Royal West's real estate business and claims that the Cantens' were personally worth $65 million, even signing personal guarantees to some investors. The Cantens have operated Royal West Properties since 1993 and the SEC claims that they started using it as an investment scam in 2002.

The complaint further alleges that Royal West was not making sufficient income to repay the principal and interest amounts to investors. The SEC claims that the Cantens used the majority of client funds to repay earlier investors and paid themselves approximately $20 million in salaries. They also apparently invested money in unrelated business adventures and paid their children and grandchildren.

The SEC filed the complaint in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida on Wednesday. The SEC is seeking permanent injunctions, disgorgement of ill-gotten gains with prejudgment interest, and civil penalties.

February 23, 2010 - Lawrence "Lee" Loomis and his father-in-law John Hagener were allegedly running an investment scam through their entities Loomis Wealth Solutions, LLC and Lismar Financial Services, LLC. According to a complaint filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") today in a California federal court, the two men raised approximately $10 million from over 100 investors since 2007.

Apparently, Loomis told prospective clients that their money would be invested in two funds called the "Naras Secured Funds," which would loan money to homebuyers and the loans would be secured by real estate deeds of trust. In reality, the SEC claims that no such trusts existed the victims' money was used to pay other investors, to pay the operating expenses of other Loomis entities, and for Loomis' and Hagener's personal use.

The complaint further states that Loomis held investment seminars in Sacramento, California in 2007 and 2008, where he encouraged people to invest in Loomis Wealth Solutions. Loomis apparently attracted investors to these seminars with newspaper ads and direct mailings.

Apparently, Loomis used hundreds of thousands of dollars of investor money to support his other failing businesses and to perpetrate a similar real estate scam. The SEC further alleges that Hagener was compensated over $190,000 for managing the funds even though he knowingly transferred capital to other businesses' bank accounts and sent out false account statements to investors.

The SEC is seeking injunctive relief, disgorgement of ill-gotten gains, and monetary penalties. Further proceedings are anticipated in the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of California.

According to police, Forster lost control her 2006 Nissan Altima and careened into the guardrail on the left side of the highway. Her vehicle then traveled across the highway and came to rest in the right travel lane. Soon thereafter, Ortiz-Calderon's 2006 Honda Accord collided head-on with Forster's vehicle.

Forster was transported to the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, where she was pronounced dead. Ortiz-Calderon was also taken to the Lahey Clinic and was listed in fair condition as of Tuesday morning.

February 14, 2010 - Two men, ages 19 and 32, suffered serious personal injuries when they were ejected from their vehicle after it collided with several trees on Wednesday at around 4:50 p.m. The men were traveling east on Tolend Road in Dover, New Hampshire, just past the Barrington town line. Apparently, their car crossed over into the westbound lane before crashing into the tree line on the side of the road.

The identities of the two men have yet to be released, but police believe they both live locally and may be from Barrington. The vehicle was severely damaged and the two men were transported to Boston hospitals.

The Dover Police Department believe that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash but the accident remains under investigation in conjunction with the Stafford County Technical Accident Reconstruction Team.

Goode's vehicle hit a fire hydrant after she lost control of her 2000 Pontiac Grand Am. The accident occurred on Route 78 at around 7:30 a.m.

According to the Winchester Police Department, Goode was traveling north on Route 78 when her car drifted into the southbound lanes. When she tried to regain control, her vehicle spun out and eventually collided with a fire hydrant on the northbound side of the street. Apparently, the hydrant made direct impact with the driver's side door. Goode was reportedly wearing a seat belt.

Goode was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where she eventually passed away on Sunday.

Police believe the crash was caused by the inclement weather, but the accident remains under investigation.
