Elderly Massachusetts Couple Killed in Fatal Crash in Rhode Island

July 31, 2009 – An elderly Massachusetts couple was involved in a fatal car crash yesterday in Cumberland, Rhode Island. The accident happened at around 4 pm on Thursday afternoon. Apparently, a minivan, driven by an 87 year old Massachusetts man, was hit by a box truck as the minivan was pulling out of an ice cream stand and attempting to turn left on Diamond Hill Road.

The man and his passenger, a 77 year old woman from Massachusetts, were pronounced dead at the scene. The box truck was owned by a home remodeling business in Cumberland. The driver of the truck was treated at a local hospital and released.

The names of the victims and their hometowns have not been released.  The accident remains under investigation by the Rhode Island State Police and Cumberland detectives.
