Abington, Massachusetts Accident Kills One, Injures Three

May 3, 2011 – Joseph Sforza, 58, from Weymouth, Massachusetts, has died as a result of serious personal injuries sustained in a two car head-on collision. Marco Herrera, 39, also from Weymouth was driving the other vehicle. According to Abington Police, Sforza lost control of his car and collided head-on with Herrera’s SUV along Route 18 in Abington. The accident occurred at around 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Firefighters required the Jaws of Life to remove Sforza from the vehicle. A medical helicopter was scheduled to transport Sforza to a Boston hospital, but was cancelled when he went into cardiac arrest. He was then transported to South Shore Hospital, where he later died. Herrera and his two passengers were also taken by ambulance to South Shore Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Witnesses claim that they saw Sforza driving erratically prior to the accident and may have clipped another vehicle’s side view mirror. Also, another vehicle swerved to avoid the accident and struck a curb, which caused a flat tire. The driver was not injured.

The Massachusetts State Police and the Plymouth County Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted at the scene. No charges have been filed and the accident remains under investigation.
