Woburn, Massachusetts Scene of Another Elderly Crash Ending in Death

July 1, 2009 – Katherine Casey, 84, of Malden,Massachusetts, has died as the result of personal injuries sustained in a car accident in which her husband, Joseph Casey, 83, was the driver. It appears that he was responsible for the accident, which occurred in Woburn, Massachusetts yesterday afternoon. The second car was also driven by an older 78 year old woman. The woman was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. She has not yet been identified.

Mr. Casey will be charged in the crash and his license has been revoked by the RMV, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney. Casey has a recent history of driving woes, including a surchargeable accident in 2004, which resulted in a license suspension. Casey then took driver rehabilitiation courses and obtained a medical clearance, which eventually resulted in the reinstatement of his license to operate. However, he had another accident in 2005, which did not result in a new suspension.

The crash yesterday occurred at the intersection of Old Cambridge Road and Russell Street. The elderly man was driving a Toyota Camry and was with his 84-year-old wife when he struck a Chrysler Sebring driven by an unidentified 78-year-old Woburn woman. The Malden couple was taken to the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, where Mrs. Casey later died from her injuries.

Woburn Police Sgt. Robert Giannotti said it appeared the Woburn woman was heading west on Russell Street when her car was struck collided by the second vehicle, which was coming out of Old Cambridge Road onto Russell Street. Woburn police and the Massachusetts State Police reconstruction team were performed accident reconstruction efforts late yesterday.
