March 2, 2013 - Bill McDermott, 66, of Boston has died as the result of serious personal injuries sustained when he was struck by an SUV, while attempting to cross William Day Boulevard near L Street in South Boston. The accident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. last Wednesday.
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, the driver of the vehicle, a 33 year-old man from South Boston, did not exhibit signs of intoxication at the time of the accident. The Massachusetts State Police are investigating the crash, but have not yet filed any charges.
McDermott was a renowned attorney, and a top adviser of U.S. Rep. Stephen F. Lynch. McDermott specialized in elections law, and had previously served as elections commissioner under former Mayor Kevin White. He had also represented state Representative Brian Wallace, a Democrat from South Boston.
