January 22, 2010 – Jason Camara, 23, from New Bedford, Massachusetts, was driving a Honda Accord that struck a 19 year old New Bedford woman who was hit in the crosswalk at Brock Avenue and Rodney French Boulevard. The woman suffered serious personal injuries when her head struck the windshield of Camara’s vehicle. The accident occurred at around 6:45 a.m. on Thursday morning.
The woman was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital and later transferred by medical helicopter to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition Friday morning. According to the New Bedford Police Department, Camara had a green light and was apparently driving the speed limit. Camara told police that he did not see the woman prior to striking her with his car and she was wearing headphones. Apparently, Camara remained at the scene, tried to assist the woman, and cooperated with police.
Camara received a citation for failing to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The accident remains under investigation by the New Bedford Police Department.
