January 13, 2016: Richard Tetreault, 84, of Bernardston, Massachusetts has died as the result of serious personal injuries sustained when he crashed into an oncoming car at the Exit 4 toll booth off on the Massachusetts Turnpike in West Springfield.
The accident occurred at 3:40 p.m. when Tetreault was taking the westbound exit. After experiencing a medical emergency, he struck another car on the ramp. Tetreault’s car then traveled over the median divider of both the east and west bound lanes, colliding with a vehicle moving eastbound. Three passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the accident; a 28 year old female from West Brookfield, MA, a 45 year old female from Belchertown, MA, and a 61 year old male from Ware, Maine.
Massachusetts State Police, The West Springfield Fire Department, and emergency medical personnel were the first responders to the scene. Tetreault and the passengers from the other vehicle were transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where Tetreault was later pronounced dead.
Neither the conditions, nor the names of the other victims have been released. State Police are continuing their investigation of the accident and no charges have been filed at this time.
