January 13, 2011 – Chelsi Varney, 18, from Yarmouth, Massachusetts, has died as a result of serious personal injuries sustained when she was struck by a minivan. Brian Gardiner, also of Yarmouth, was operating the vehicle eastbound on Buck Island Road prior to striking Varney, who was walking northbound on West Yarmouth Road. The accident occurred at around 6:15 p.m. on Monday.

Yarmouth emergency medical personnel treated Varney at the scene. She was then transported by a medical helicopter to Boston Medical Center, where she eventually died. Varney was a senior at Dennis-Yarmouth High School, where she excelled academically.

No charges have been filed against Gardiner and the accident remains under investigation by the Yarmouth Police Department.

September 9, 2011 – Mark McMullen, 44, from Boston, Massachusetts, was fatally shot by police officers after leading them on a 20 mile high speed chase. The pursuit began in Roxbury after police witnessed McMullen’s car strike a woman, who turned out to suffer only minor injuries. Boston Police officers immediately pursued McMullen and were later joined by the Massachusetts State Police. The chase continued down Interstate 93 South and onto Route 3 South.

McMullen eventually exited the highway at exit 14 near Route 228 in Rockland. While still on the exit ramp McMullen continued to evade capture and caused his vehicle to strke two police cruisers. Police officers then allegedly fired three shots at McMullen resulting in his death.

A state trooper, who’s car was struck head on by McMullen, was taken to South Shore Hospital and treated for his injuries. Two other officers also received medical treatment. The Rockland Police Department assisted at the scene, but were not involved in the chase.

August 11, 2011 – Bridget Culhane, 10, from Littleton, Massachusetts, has died as a result of serious personal injuries sustained when she was run over in her driveway. Barbara Culhane, Bridget’s mother, was pulling into the driveway when she accidentally ran the vehicle over her daughter. The accident occurred at around 6:00 p.m. on Monday at the family’s home in Littleton.

Bridget was taken by a medical helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Boston, where she was pronounced dead. According to the Littleton Police Department, Bridget was laying down in the driveway playing with a pet bird.

The police investigation revealed that the mother’s view was blocked by parked cars and the shape of the driveway. Police also state that there was no evidence of impairment on the mother’s part. Bridget is mourned by her family after this tragic accident.

July 7, 2011 – Jack Pearsall, 16, from Falmouth, Massachusetts, has died as a result of serious personal injuries sustained when he was struck by an automobile. Monica Mitchell, 42, from Mashpee, was operating a Ford Explorer when the SUV struck Pearsall near the intersection of Old Barnstable Road and Leather Leaf Lane. The accident occurred at around 10:30 p.m. on Friday.

Mitchell had allegedly been drinking wine at a friend’s house prior to the accident. Mitchell also allegedly continued driving and was stopped in a line of traffic when police caught up with her. Mitchell was arraigned on Tuesday in Falmouth District Court. She was charged with motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of personal injury resulting in death, two counts of driving to endanger, and a marked lanes violation. Mitchell was released on her own recognizance.

According to court records, Pearsall was walking along the road with three friends after attending a fireworks display in Mashpee. Pearsall was a soccer standout and would have been a junior at Falmouth High School in the fall.

The accident remains under investigation.

December 1, 2010 – A 14 year old girl from Andover, Massachusetts has sustained serious personal injuries when she was hit by a car while trying to board a school bus. Melanie Nesteruk, 17, also from Andover was driving the minivan that hit the teenage girl. The accident occurred at around 7:15 a.m. Monday morning near 200 Andover Street.

The teen, whose identity has not been released, was knocked down by the vehicle but remained conscious. She was initially transported to Lawrence General Hospital and then was transferred to Children’s Hospital in Boston. The 14 year old was first listed in serious condition, but has since been upgrade to fair condition.

According to the Andover Police Department, Nesteruk did not see the bus or the pedestrian prior to the accident. The police have cited Nesteruk for passing a school bus while its lights are flashing.

The accident remains under investigation.

November 17, 2010 – Norman Holler, 66, from Quincy, Massachusetts has died as a result of serious personal injuries sustained when he was struck by a car while trying to cross a street. The accident occurred along the Southern Artery in Quincy on Saturday. According to police, a car in the first lane stopped to let Holler cross, but he dropped his water bottle in the process. Holler then bent down to pick up the bottle and continued crossing the street. As he entered the second lane, the oncoming car did not see Holler and struck him with the vehicle.

Holler was transported to Boston Medical Center where he was treated for severe head trauma. Holler unfortunately passed away at around 6:45 p.m. on Monday.

At this point the driver has not been charged in the crash. The accident remains under investigation by the Quincy Police Department.

November 1, 2010 – Julio Andrade, 54, from New Bedford, Massachusetts has died as a result of serious personal injuries sustained when he was struck by a van while trying to cross an intersection in his wheelchair. The driver’s identity has yet to be released. Apparently, after the van hit Andrade his wheelchair was pinned underneath the vehicle and he was dragged for a distance. The accident occurred on Friday at around 3:45 p.m. while Andrade was attempting to cross the intersection of Route 6 and Pleasant Street in New Bedford.

Andrade was transported from the scene to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. Apparently, emergency officials did not consider Andrade’s injuries to be life threatening at the scene. However, Andrade was transferred by a medical helicopter to Boston Medical Center where he unfortunately passed away at around 11:00 p.m. on Friday night.

According to his family members, Andrade was traveling back home after visiting his brother’s home in downtown New Bedford and the route was one he took daily. Andrade was active in his community and very outgoing. Andrade was one of 11 siblings and had four children of his own.

The family has indicated that they will press charges against the driver of the van, if the police do not. The accident remains under investigation.

October 26, 2010 – Joshua Stimson, 22, from Brighton, Massachusetts and a Boston University graduate has died as a result of serious personal injuries sustained when anMBTA Logo.jpg MBTA trolley struck him early Sunday morning in Boston. Apparently, an inbound D line trolley hit Stimson while he was standing inside a fenced in area of the track between the Longwood and Fenway stations. The accident occurred at around 12:19 a.m. on Sunday.

The MBTA Transit police, Brookline Police and Fire departments, and Boston Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene where they unfortunately pronounced Stimson dead. It is unclear why Stimson was inside the fenced in area.

The accident remains under investigation by the MBTA.

July 1, 2010 – Katie Enos, 14, from Westford, Massachusetts suffered serious personal injuries when she was struck by a car while jogging with a friend on Carlisle Road. Richard Shattuck, 84, from Stoneham, was driving the vehicle that hit Enos. The accident occurred Tuesday at around 1 p.m. near the intersection of Concord Road in Westford.

A medical helicopter transported Enos from the scene to Children’s Hospital in Boston, where she is currently being treated for life threatening injuries. The friend who was joggin with Enos was not injured in the accident.

Shattuck, who was driving home from New Hampshire, claims that the accident was not his fault. The accident remains under investigation by the Westford Police Department, who have not filed charges against Shattuck.

May 16, 2010 – Keith Yorke, 55, from Sandwich, Massachusetts has died as a result of serious personal injuries sustained when he was struck by a 1997 Ford Escort, driven by Nicole Giles, 18, from Mashpee. The accident occurred at around 5:17 a.m. while Yorke was walking his dog along Asa Meiggs Road.

Yorke was transported by ambulance to Forestdale School and was then taken by a medical helicopter to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Giles was not injured in the crash. According to the Sandwich Police Department, Giles called police from the scene to notify them of the accident.

The crash is still under investigation by the Sandwich Police and no charges have been filed.
